Overview
The Indigenous Community Corrections Initiative (ICCI) supports the development of alternatives to incarceration and reintegration projects tailored to the unique circumstances of Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
Renewed in 2022 as part of the Federal Framework to Reduce Recidivism, the ICCI was expanded to create more opportunities for Indigenous women and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people.
Through ICCI contribution funding, eligible recipients can develop culturally grounded approaches that provide alternatives to incarceration and/or support Indigenous offenders as they reintegrate into their communities. These approaches may include:
- counselling
- addiction treatment
- cultural ceremonies
- life skills coaching
- family reunification activities
- mental health support
Program benefits
The Indigenous Community Corrections Initiative:
- Increases communities' capacity to respond to safety issues by supporting alternatives to incarceration and reintegration services, that reflect the unique needs of justice-involved Indigenous Peoples.
- Provides culturally relevant services such as counselling, treatment, life skills coaching and family reunification and helps address the effects of residential schools and involvement with child welfare systems.
- Improves knowledge of effective community reintegration practices and supports alternatives to incarceration that help prevent and reduce recidivism amongst Indigenous Peoples, contributing to efforts to reduce Indigenous overrepresentation in the criminal justice system
- Supports Indigenous-led efforts to deliver culturally appropriate services that promote and strengthen pro-social behaviours.
